Food Rules Leading You Nowhere?

Rules, hmmm. I like rules. They keep me safe. They help me uphold high standards in life and in business. By learning to keep rules, I actually open up opportunities for myself. Like learning the rules of playing an instrument or the rules of a sport. By learning and keeping those rules I am free to play.

What about the rules of eating? Do you have rules that determine when to eat, what you eat, how you eat? Some of those rules may have come from your upbringing, your family and friends. Many likely come from books you have read, classes you have taken, magazines, internet searches, Facebook posts, your doctor, your dietitian and lots more. Much like this block wall we have likely many guidelines that help prevent what might be lurking on the other side from getting us. But, what is lurking on the other side that we require so many rules? What is the big fear that is motivating you to have and keep your food rules?

Food Rules Leading You Nowhere?

For the large majority of healthy Americans, I believe the biggest monster lurking on the other side is guilt and shame. Unfortunately our big fear that requires so many rules to protect us from is inevitably leading to a dead end of guilt anyway. Thoughts like, "I may gain weight and be ashamed of myself if I can't keep these rules." "My friends will see me eating that and then they will "unlike" me." "If I can't live up to these rules, it shows I have no self control and then I will feel guilty for my lack of will-power." All these statements have an underlying fear or guilty emotion inspiring them.

Most individuals who have set up a life of endless eating rules to avoid guilt are already living in guilt and shame now. Some have been doing so for years and actually don't know any different. The wall and the rules are always in the front of their minds. They can't imagine life without it. It's like they have been setting up rules to avoid what's lurking on the other side only to discover they were wrong side in the first place.
